| 22.07 - Diamond V770 Ultra Info |
A bit ago I fired a small news
with the startup codes of NVIDIA TNT(2) cards:
With this you can see very quick what chip you really have. This is to see if it´s an Ultra (0029) or a 'normal' (0028) TNT2. But the Diamond Viper V770 Ultra shows up 0028 at startup. Does´nt matter because they are real Ultras but Mike of Viper3D fired a mail about that to Diamond support and here´s the answer: Ah, an interesting question! But no need to worry. The info you have been watching is either incorrect or simply incomplete (Nope :-)). Here's the scoop: Here's how one particular Diamond Viper V770 Ultra might appear in the Windows Registry: VEN_10DE&DEV_0028&SUBSYS_4A061092&REV... (etc.) - the 10DE stands for nVidia, the chip maker I hope that answers your questions and clarifies your wonders. Nope... it doesn´t :-) Take a look in the NVAGP.INF file of
the NVIDIA refrence drivers. There you can find the nunbers listed by chips:
So the answer of the Diamond support still doesn´t give a good answer why diamond displays 0028 for its V770U. |

As part of the agreement, SGI has dismissed its patent infringement suit against NVIDIA and NVIDIA has licensed SGI's enabling 3D graphics patent portfolio. As part of the alliance, SGI has licensed NVIDIA's patent portfolio. Further terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Comment: This makes it more hard for 3Dfx to find a geometry processor for the Voodoo3 successor. |

| 19.07 - 16MB vs 32MB |
| The Techzone made a comparsion
between a 32MB Diamond Viper V770 and a 16MB variant of the card: Again, there is no clear winner here. Both cards posted nearly the same scores across the board. The benefits of the extra 16 megs of ram shows at higher resolution and higher textures. The 32 meg Viper was slightly faster than the 16 meg Viper in high texture demos (Crusher and Quake 3) This might be due to the fact that I manage to overclock the memory of the 32 meg card higher. Given the results I got, I don't see a reason to get a 32 meg Viper over a 16 meg one. The 16 meg Viper is every bit as fast as the 32 meg version when running today's games. While the 32 meg Viper has an advantage in higher texture games, the difference isn't enough to make up for the savings. Besides, if the game exceeds the memory requirements of the card, it can always texture out to AGP memory. Also if you really care about future games, you would be getting a Viper V770 Ultra. Comment: The benchmarks I made in the Cardtest99 show that you can see a drop of the 16MB card (Guillemot Maxi Gamer Xentor with 16MB) in high truecolor resolutions. Here is not enough memory left to store textures at that resolution (even with tripple buffering) with 16MB. That´s the only reason for 32MB. |

| 18.07 - TNT and Unreal |
| Epic´s Tim Sweeney made a
large explanation on the Unreal Techpage that explains you what you have to do to get Unreal to
work in Direct 3D with a TNT card. Here´s a bit: Which brings us to... These factors are unfortunate, especially for novice gamers who buy a new 3D game and have trouble getting it working. But they're not a sign of evil or incompetence among companies. When you combine the free, open nature of the PC hardware and software market with the incredibly rapid pace of 3D hardware innovation, you get a certain amount of chaos. This is why PC games are much less reliable than Playstation games, but also why PC's and games get better every few months. So, I see that as an acceptable tradeoff. Responsibilities of Software and Hardware makers This process isn't perfect. We've released a lot of Unreal patches, and made many improvements to the product -- and the patching process -- along the way. In the beginning, we released many separate sporadic hardware-specific patches as .zip files, and that made it hard for users to keep up with the proper complete version. Since then, we created the Unreal tech page to keep the community informed of patches and progress; we created our own installer/patcher to automate the process, and we have a private beta test team consisting of enthusiasts in the community to validate patches before they're released publicly. So we're always making a real effort to improve the ease-of-use |
