29.06.98 - Speculations |
| There are new sepculations at 3D Overview
about problems with the RIVA TNT because the promises made by Nvidia showed a higher
performance. Now you can say that the benchmarks made by Cyrellis came from a prototype board and the drivers ran only at 50% ( How did they count that ? ). It´s your choice what you think about such speculations at this time. You can find a Overview of 21 actual 3D cards at The Fast Graphics Site |
27.06.98 - NVIDIA 3DNow! driver |
| Nvidia´s RIVA AGP driver that is optimized for AMD´s K6-2 with 3DNow! is now ready for download. The download did´nt work before. The driver does ONLY work with AGP cards: NVIDIA driverspage |
27.06.98 - 3D cards comparison |
| Jo Lux made a Webpage
with a comparison ble of 3D cards. He shows the technical data of the following cards:
RIVA TNT, PowerVRSG, Savage3D, G200, Banshee and Voodoo2. The RIVA TNT looks impressive in this comparison. If have no new information about a new
Erazor with TNT. You could read in the ELSA Newsgroup that a ZX Board will be ready at the
end of july and that a TNT board will come later in autumn. but I´m still waiting for
technical details of these cards. |
26.06.98 - FF7 - Reasons |
| You can read first answers of the developers to the
problems with FF7 at CYRELLIS and Bjorn3D. Besides RIVA cards, the game
does also not work with Rendition cards. Eidos Interactive and Square Electronic Arts L.L.C say that this is caused by the inability of these cards to work with Textures that have only 8-Bit color depth. The reason for the 8-Bit textures can be found in the roots of that game. The game was developed for Playstation with its less memory. This was not changed when the textures and effects were converted to PC. In a E-Mail from Eidos that can be read partly at CYRELLIS they say that there will be no support for other cards in future and that a solution has to come from the card developers. We´ll see if that are thes last words to that. It seems that the game developers have problems to follow the fast technical ecolution of today 3D accelerators (see Unreal). I hope that the chip devolopers will help the game developers to understand their cards and will not hide their technology but show the game developers how to use them best. Nvidia´s Summercamp is a first step in the right direction. Otherwise you will have one more problem if you want to buy a new game ! |
25.06.98 - FF7 no RIVA support |
| The new game Final Fantasy VII by EIDOS Interactive (
Tomb Raider ) does currently NOT support the RIVA / ZX chipset although ATI Rage Pro,
Intel I740, Matrox G200 and NEC PowerVR2 is supported through Direct 3D. This is abolutlutly not understandable, because the RIVA chip is optimized for Direct 3D. There´s a comment from NVIDIA at Rivazone´s Diskussion Board where you can read that the current RIVA driver (The actual Erazor driver is based on that) is certified by Microsoft´s Hardware Qualification Lab but they did not test that game yet. There´s no comment by EIDOS at the moment but you will read it at CYRELLIS soon. There´s also a description how to get that game 'running' with a RIVA chipset. One chance to show the developer of the game that RIVA support is very important is Rivazone´s E-Mail campaign. You can read a review of that game at Next Generation. |
