Hercules 3D Prophet II GTS 64MB (9/9)
Conclusion So, is it worth spending the extra 200DM for the 64MB version? If you have money to burn, own a fast CPU and are addicted to playing in 32bit color at very high resolutions, this card is for you. However, in everyday use the differences to the 32MB version are only noticeable at closer inspection. Hercules tries to win over the hardcore gamer by increasing the card's base speed. Additionally, the overclocking potential is definitely higher than that of the 32MB card, thanks to the faster RAM. Due to the faster memory clock the 64MB card has some advantages in AA (if you look on OpenGL). We have yet to see what NVIDIA's NV15GL version of the GeForce2 will turn out to be. In early NVIDIA presentations, this was supposed to be the version that would ship at 400MHz DDR memory clock (200MHz x 2). However, there is currently no 5ns DDR RAM available in any but the most scarce quantities that would allow this kind of speed. This is only a matter of time, though. Besides, by now everyone should be aware that any given card can only hold the performance-crown for a very short period of time nowadays - right? If you're still debating which version to buy, you're probably better off getting the 32 and investing the money you saved into more RAM or a better mainboard or the like. (Hey, maybe it's time to take your girlfriend out to dinner. Just a suggestion .) Spending almost 1000 DM for a videocard is not a new development. That's how much a Voodoo 2 SLI rig used to cost. On the other hand, the gain in performance was much more tangible there . DVI does win this board some points for features, but those are more theoretical. Currently digital flatpanel screens just aren't very widespread enough to make it a factor in a buyer's decision. Lars "Borsti" Weinand - Mai 2000
