Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64MB - KYRO II (14/15) Overclocking The overclocking potential of the Prophet 4500 seems quite promising. After all, 5ns memory is specified to run at up to 200MHz. Besides, the chip is cooled very well by its large heatsink / fan. Hercules is promising to include an overclocking tool with the Prophet 4500 in its shipping for, but at the moment, overclocking options are limited to manually editing the registry or using Powerstrip v3, which recognizes the Kyro II as of build b125:
Once I started overclocking, though, I was quickly disappointed. Even an increase of just 5MHz led to picture corruption and visual artifacts. At 185 MHz, the card would crash the system within a few seconds. I was honestly hoping for much more, especially since the increased clockspeed should have direct influence on real-world performance. As things stand now, 180MHz is the limit. For the sake of completeness included the scores with the standard clockspeed of 175MHz as well as those when overclocking the card to 180MHz.
While we do see some improvement, it remains small due to the minimal increase in clockspeed. It remains to be seen whether the final shipping boards will lend themselves better to overclocking. This was, after all, a pre-production board. |
