The chip

Obviously, paring the chip down to one rendering pipeline and removing the T&L unit is going to take its toll on 3D performance. At least the remaining pipeline can render 3 textures per clock cycle. Thankfully, Hyper-Z capability, support for 3D textures, adaptive video de-interlacing for video and DVD playback, and other features of the "standard" RADEON chip remain untouched.

This diagram illustrates the impact of the missing second texture pipeline and T&L unit on the VE compared to the RADEON.

The card

The layout of this AGP 4X card is pretty standard. It is cooled only by a passive heatsink, which makes sense considering the card is aimed at an office environments. After all: no fan means no additional noise. The diminished overclocking potential is unlikely to be a great loss to users of 2D software. The card carries 32MB of memory consisting of four 64Bit DDR SDRAM modules rated at 5.5ns. The chip and memory run synchronously at 183MHz.

The RADEON VE's dual display feature is very flexible. It allows for either a second CRT monitor, a (digital) TFT display or a TV as a secondary display. Since the second RAMDAC isn't needed when using the secondary connector for digital output, you can even use TV-Out at the same time, giving you three ouputs at once! The following combinations are possible:

  • VGA + VGA
  • VGA + DVI
  • VGA + Video Out
  • VGA + DVI + Video Out

The VE's DVI output supports resolutions up to 1600x1200. For comparison, NVIDIA's MX is limited to 1280x1024. ATi ships an adaptor that lets you use a standard CRT on the secondary output (DVI->VGA).

The Video-Out signal can be sent to your TV either by S-VHS or cinch cable (using an adaptor). You'll find two cables 1.80m in length in the box already. ATi even thought to include a scart adaptor (only cinch and audio)!!!
