Report: CeBIT 2002 (1/5) |
By Lars Weinand - Editor In Chief RIVA Station / Editor Tomīs Hardware Guide CeBIT 2002 Report Some things you can just count on. The legendarily bad weather in Hanover, Germany during the CeBIT computer trade show is definitely among them. And to think, this year the chances of breaking with this "tradition" had looked pretty good, too... Just goes to show that even with modern methods and technology, weather prediction is as much a guessing game as ever. Ah well... I made my way to the show from the pleasantly sunny Bavaria, and the further north I got, the bleaker the weather became, until my train was surrounded by a thick, grey, soupy mist. Typical CeBIT weather: Rainy, windy, and co-o-o-old....
But enough complaining. This year's CeBIT was pleasantly reorganized. The marathon of old between halls 9 (multimedia) and 13 (Taiwan area) is now a thing of the past. Almost all of the graphics cards and motherboard companies are grouped together in halls 19 and 20! And there was definitely a lot to be seen there, even though most of it wasn't all that new. ATi's integrated chipset and SiS's upcoming SiS 330/336 graphics chip were practically the only really new products. Power VR showed a tweaked Kyro II (SE) core and NVIDIA announced a new revision of the nForce chipset supporting DDR 333. But beyond that: GeForce 4 and RADEON based cards wherever you looked. Ah, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Read on for a short overview of the new and not-so-new developments and introductions of this year's CeBIT. |
