VideoLogic SIROCCO Crossfire (4/5) Cables All
cables needed to set up the system are fortunately included in the set by
Videologic. On the good side, the speaker cables are quite long and allow
a very flexible placement of the speakers. On the bad side, the cables to
connect to the soundcard are way too short. They only allow for placing
the amp right on top your desk, so if you want to set it up on another
table or somwhere else altogether, you'd better buy some longer cables
before you leave your coputer store. And while you're at it, don't forget
to pick up some cable binders to avoid snaking cables all over your
desktop and behind your computer. Sound The
sound is pretty much what you can expect from this class of speakers: the
high frequencies are clear and the transition to the low frequencies is
smooth. The bass has a good kick to it, but remains quite warm,
well-rounded and free from distortion. Even at high volume the sound
didn't become distorted, although it did create some new, not to mention
novel problems with my computer. My case would rattle in time with the
sound and my poor Trinitron monitor's suspension wires started dancing
like ravers at an all-nighter :-). However,
the Crossfire is also a great performer at lower volume. The seperate
volume regulator for the the bass lets you adapt the bass to your current
needs. No matter if you're watching a DVD, listening to music or showing
your friends who's da man in a deathmatch, you always have the power you
need without being drowned out by an unbalanced bass or having to deal
with a squeaking
satellite. I did some audio testing with a varied selection of music CDs, DVDs and some PC games. The "Terminator Theme" or "Jurassic Lunch" in a special 20Bit digital recording are perfect for discovering a system's strengths and weaknesses. The more audiophile among you will probably want the high frequencies to be a bit clearer or more transparent - guitars, for example, sometimes sound slighlty dull - but taking the system's size and costs into account, that would be asking a bit too much.
Finding
a good place for the subwoofer is slightl problematic, since it covers
enough of the mid range spectrum that you can still hear its location.
This makes it almost impossible to put it anywhere but in the middle of
the two front satellites, e.g. under your desk. |
