Testsystem & Setup

All tests were run in Windows 98SE on a Pentium 4 system running at 1500MHz:

CPU Intel Pentium 4 1500 MHz
Mainboard Intel GB 850
Chipset i850
FSB 100 MHz
AGP-Clock 66 MHz
Memory 256MB PC-800 RDRAM
HD Seagate 12GB ST313021A DMA 66
OS Windows 98SE - DX 8.0a
Misc 10MBit Network card (Realtek)

I can already see the group of enraged AMD supporters begin to protest this choice, but let me explain my reasoning: The first point: I personally donīt care about the flamewars going around between AMD and Intel supporters. And when testing several cards based on the same chip, it is basically irrelevant what processor platform is used, as long as it delivers enough performance. This is already the second big GeForce 3 test here at RIVA Station. If you want to see more benchmarks and comparisons – on an AMD platform as well – feel free to take a look at our first big GeForce 3 roundup (GeForce 3 - 7 way shootout). A performance comparison with over 25 other cards on a P3 800 and an Athlon 1200 can be found in the RIVA Station VGA-Charts.

Driver Versions used during testing:

  • 3D Power Morpheus - v12.41
  • Chaintech G300 - v12.41
  • Gigabyte GV-GF3000D - v12.10
  • Leadtek WinFast GeForce 3 TDH - v12.60
  • PowerColor ChameLeon - v12.41
  • NVIDIA GeForce 2 ULTRA: NVIDIA Referencedrivers v12.41
  • NVIDIA GeForce 2 PRO: NVIDIA Referencedrivers v12.41
  • NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 400 64MB: NVIDIA Referencedrivers v12.41

The Benchmarks

I used the following benchmarks for testing:

  • Evolva - DirectX 7 game with T&L Support
  • Quake3 v1.17 - OpenGL with HW Transformation Support
  • 3DMark 2001 - Synthetic DirectX 8 Benchmark

These benchmarks are followed up by some overclocking tests, but let’s start off with results at stock speeds.
