Windows 98 <-> Windows 2000 Performance

I thought a comparison between Win98 and Win2000 performance might be interesting, so I did a little testing. The Windows2000 faction will probably cry foul and point out the fact that these results are outdated and that newer drivers in combination with DirectX 8 will yield much better results. True, I concede that. But the point of this comparison isn't to find the "better" OS but to determine the performance of the card "as is", meaning in its shipping state with the included drivers. That is also the reason I tested using Leadtek's driver set and not the newest NVIDIA reference drivers.

Since I don't want to make this review any longer than it already is, I'll just condense the results into table form:

Well, we can conclude from this that Windows 2000 simply isn't primarily meant as a gaming platform with the current Leadtek driver. The price alone makes it an unattractive choice for gamers. If you do decide to go with Microsoft's professional OS, you'll just have to live with lower performance for now. (But let's face it, most of these scores are still far from bad!) The good news is that performance seems to be increasing with every new driver NVIDIA releases. As I said before. IŽll take a closer look on this topic soon!
