ATi RADEON - The Empire strikes back (6/15) Testsystems So what do all these features mean in the real world of gaming? To answer this question, the RADEON had face the competitors from 3dfx and NVIDIA. Three systems were used for testing. Special thanks go out to the great people at Intel Germany, who were kind enough to supply me with a genuine 1 GHz Pentium III CPU. All tests were also run on the two new RS-Computers that were built with videocard testing in mind: Pentium III System: Based on ASUSs new CUSL2 board with Intels I815 chipset, it runs an Intel Pentium III 866E (6,5 x 133) and 128 MB PC-133 RAM. The only other component in the system was the network card. Athlon System: Built around Tekram KA-7, which uses VIAs KX-133 chipset, it gets to run an AMD Athlon 700 (Classic) and 128MB PC-133 RAM. Again, the network adapter was the only other component in the system.
Both systems were powered by Antecs PP303X 300W powersupply. Each was also equipped with a 12GB Seagate UDMA-66 harddrive. The 1 GHz PIII was built around ASUSs tried and true P3B-F BX mainboard, since the Slot 1 CPU obviously didnt fit into the CUSL2s socket 370. The CPU was clocked at 7,5x133=1000 MHz. As a result of running the FSB at 133 MHz, both the PCI and AGP busses were overclocked, with the AGP running at 89 MHz up from the usual 66 MHz. The RADEON and GeForce2 boards had no problems with this configuration, but the Voodoo 5 5500 refused to work at this speed. So, overclockers be warned! All benchmarks were run without sound!
