Report: DVD on your TV with a PC Tips for TV-Out (8/9) The alternative: a home player
If you're not one to tweak drivers, hack your registry or simply don't have your PC anywhere near your TV, you'll probably prefer the "classic" way to watch DVDs with a DVD player. These aren't all that expensive anymore either. Take for example the Cyberhome AD-M 512, which has found a place in my livingroom next to my TV. What's remarkable about this player is that it is based (almost completely) on PC technology, using a KTC PC DVD drive. You'd never guess that though looking at the outside.
Besides DVDs, the player also reads CD-Rs. This is important because it allows you to play your own recorded CDs as well as MP3 and Video CDs. It even has a digital output for an AC-3 amplifier on the back panel. Region code? Well, yes, if you care to leave it activated... ;-). Thanks to its MP3 support and AC-3 output, this player is almost luxury model at a bargain price of DM 599.-, offering some features you won't even find on more expensive players. Cyberhome is also offering another, smaller model which comes without the MP3 and AC-3 support. Yamakawa is offering similar models at a comparable price. The beauty of DVD home players lies in their simplicity: Just insert the DVD and press play. Then just sit back, enjoy the show and do the rest with your remote from the couch..
