Performance comparsion - Windows 98SE vs. ME (8/8) Fazit
Coffee or tea? Milk or sugar? Plastic or paper? Win98SE or WinME? All fascinating and important questions. Well, we can help you with the last one: Either one. From a gamers perspective, the differences are negligible. The GeForce2 yields slightly better results under ME, but the difference just isnt great enough to justify an upgrade. The Voodoo5 shows no gain whatsoever. It is common knowledge that a Windows installation drags more and more junk around with it the older it gets, slowing it down. As a result, a fresh installation can often improve performance, without any upgrading software or hardware. This might explain why some of the web board reports around the web find (the freshly installed) WinME to be generally faster than (their often old installation of) 98SE. So, this duel turns out to be a tie, with both parties still standing and looking pretty good. Win98SE continues to be a solid gaming platform, so you can safely stick with it. But if youve fallen for the new look and feel of WinME/2000 or want the improved Plug&Play functionality, theres nothing to keep you from upgrading. Gaming performance is generally unaffected, so you dont need to worry about performance loss. And to make the upgrade even sweeter for any real gamer, dont forget: You get the Internet Edition of Hearts! (Oh no, its too much!) Lars "Borsti" Weinand - August 2000 Offene Fragen?
